When the vaccine first became widely available around the US, a sigh of relief accompanied all of those who have spent the past year plus stuck indoors. With restrictions being lifted during the summer and some semblance of normalcy managing to return, it opened up for a new variant to spread. Now, after first mandating masks in indoor areas just a few weeks ago, Los Angeles County is now requiring masks for all outdoor events.

The new mandate will go into effect on August 19 at 11:59 p.m. and requires that everyone, no matter what their vaccination status is, wear masks outdoors in large crowds. The Delta variant is now the most dominant COVID-19 strain in Los Angeles, and has seen a handful of breakthrough cases among those who have been vaccinated, with those unvaccinated making up a majority of the hospitalizations.

The new mandate comes after AEG and Live Nation both announced that they will be requiring proof of vaccination for entry to all live concerts and festivals. Lollapalooza acted as the first major multi-genre festival in the US also requiring proof of vaccination for entry. The festival proved successful and has shown no evidence of being a super-spreader event, according to CNN.
