Nicolas Jaar‘s newest compilation is one of the most unique musical projects of his career, ironically thanks to the lack of music throughout. Caves – A Compilation of Silences is a series of eight ambient and meditative productions, each with a extended pause or “cave” in the middle of the piece. The caves are designed with functionality in mind, allowing the listener to use the track as a timer for cooking, meditation, running, walking, or sleeping. On Twitter, Jaar shared the inspiration behind the project:
“[I]made the 20 minute timer initially for myself so that I didn’t have to use my phone alarm when I meditated. Then I shared it with some friends and they found it useful so I asked other artists to make short pieces that prepare people for moments of silence.” – Nicolas Jaar
Caves – A Compilation of Silences is the first 2021 release from Other People, Jaar’s label. The project is available for purchase on Bandcamp, and all proceeds will go to the Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery, a space in India which “offers girls and young women… an opportunity to develop their academic and spiritual potential.”
