Hey, very happy to welcome you to the Radio Show and Podcast community. Tell us a little bit more about yourself. Introduce yourself to the community
Hey thank you so much for having me its great to be on board, well, I’m “Where is Leroy?” im from Australia Ive just released my 4th track “PAVEMENTS” with a music video and im currently a part of the DREGGmusic collective.
One thing that I’m always interested in, when I sit down and chat with artists is, what their defining moment was that they knew that they wanted to be in music… What was that moment in time for you?
Well Ive always been a writer, I used to just write down my observations in sometype of poetry form because i love trying to rhyme anything with everything in a way that you didnt originally think it could rhyme. I think the defining moment was the first time i sat down and had a jam with Sam (of Dregg music) on a beat the he had made, I remember we were in his studio back in Queensland he was playing the beat and i had some rhymes written down, I just started trying to fit the song into the beat and fell in love with it, I think I stayed up for like 2 days straight after that trying to write for the beat.
Do you mix and master yourself or do you have an engineer or a producer that works with you?
I dont mix and master yet its something im really interested in learning, we try and keep everything in the family in the DREGGMUSIC collective so Placid Aggressive studios are where i spend most of my nights if we are mixing, though if someones hanging at the studio im there just tell me where.
What motivates you? Not just in your music but in your normal life as well.
I want to be happy first and for most, motivating me to get out of bed or sit down and write a song is just being happy, making makes me feel good feels like i have some type of purpose rather then just drifting through space, I know that makes me really happy so motivating to move that as far forward as possible i know makes me feel more whole as a person.
I am personally on a mission to get good music heard by everyone. What is one thing that bothers you the most about trying to come up in the music world today and, do you prefer being underground or, is the mainstream something you strive for?
Im my own worst enemy and my own biggest distraction, I lose my focus really easily at times then will find myself buying clothes online, online shopping is also a gigantic distraction and also uber eats I get too into ordering stuff on my phone cause i like it when packages rock up at my door haah.
Who, musically, is one of your bigger influences?
I really like Lil Wayne hes probably one of my biggest influences, I think he has one of the best flows in the game anything from Lil Wayne gets me amped to write music I love hobo Johnson too i think he sounds incredible i love that different unique style.
One question that I like to ask artists is, how did Covid affect your music in particular and the music scene in your area?
Pretty hard to be honest I have been living in Melbourne for the last couple years so we were I think the first place in Australia to go into lockdown and we stayed in lockdown nearly all year, It was pretty rough alot of times i didnt feel like i was mentally able to write anthing worth keeping i was feeling really overwhelmed and helpless. Im lucky enough to live with some of the crew from our collective so we did get the chance to record a bit and release a couple songs but it feltl ike it was much harder mentally to overcome if that makes any sense.
I, myself, personally think that there’s too much social media out there to keep up with. I understand why it’s necessary but there’s a ton of it out there. What are your feelings on social media and music today?
I have a bit of love hate relationship with it, sometimes it motivates me heaps, other times i just wind up comparing myself to other people and it makes me sad, but if you try to focus on yourself and not get too distracted by what everyone else is doing I think its dope. I think all social media has its positives and negatives really im trying to stop myself scrolling so aimlessly lately so i put like timers on myself for ho long i can randomly just view things with no purpose.
Do you create music often? When can we expect another release?
As often as my Brain will allow me too haha, having a routine for creating is important but difficult, I have another song in the works thats gonna be coming out shortly follow me on my socials to stay updated @whereisleroy on instagram
I grew up in the 90’s, I listened to everyone from Dr. Dre, to Weezer, to Pink Floyd, Metallica, Cypress Hill and back again. I truly believe that the 90’s were one of the greatest era’s for original music. Which era of music is one of your favorites?
I personally believe we are living in the best era for music, not only for the way technology has improved for muscians and producers to now have access to making sounds that you couldnt really capture back in the day, I think with how fast popular culture is moving now anything that is going to catch everybodys eye needs to be really different.
If you could swap yourself into a different artist, who would it be?
Probably with Chris from Dregg, he keeps his room really really clean so if i could swap with him my room would automatically be cleaner
What tips or advice would you give someone that’s just starting out in the music game?
Network your ass off just keep putting things out there
