Road Test: How Fiona Falkiner used the Healthy Mummy App to stay fit and healthy while in hotel quarantine

Healthy Mummy global ambassador Fiona Falkiner has had a hectic few weeks whilst also committing to the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge and using the exercises from the Healthy Mummy App every single day for two weeks!

The beautiful TV personality has been accompanying her fiancee Hayley Willis all over Australia for work with their five month old son Hunter in tow.

However, this has involved hotel quarantine for two weeks in Queensland and they are currently in lockdown in Melbourne.

But kudos to Fiona, she made a commitment and has stuck to it. What an inspiration! Here is how she did it in her own words….

Fiona on how she has stuck to The Healthy Mummy app in hotel quarantine and lockdown…

“It’s not easy trying to find motivation to lead a healthy lifestyle while living in a hotel room with a young baby and in the middle of lockdown!

But I’m not alone. There are millions of mums in Australia right now trying to navigate all these restrictions whilst also logging onto Zoom meetings for work, home-schooling their kids, trying to keep on top of their diet and also finding the time to fit in exercise.  It’s not an easy time for so many!

But thankfully, The Healthy Mummy’s 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge has helped clear up some of my brain space – as now I don’t have to worry about what to cook or what exercises I can do from my hotel room.

Fiona reveals she and Hayley have had to postpone their wedding again

When I signed up to The Healthy Mummy app, Hayley and I had rescheduled our wedding for October – and I wanted some help losing the baby weight and fitting into my wedding dress. But unfortunately, we’ve had to postpone our big day again until next year.

So rather than lose focus, I just have to refocus.

I’m not doing this just to lose weight for my wedding day. I’m doing this so that I can lead the best life I can for my family and also to feel good within myself.

That’s easier said than done though. While we were in hotel quarantine in Queensland (we were up there for Hayley’s work) I had to keep reminding myself that if I worked out, I’d feel so good afterwards.

It’s easy to slip into the mindset of ‘the sun’s not out, I’m just going to chill out’. There were three days when I didn’t do a workout from The Healthy Mummy app and my mental health really suffered.

The thing I love about The Healthy Mummy workouts are that you don’t need a gym, you don’t need to leave the room! Which was handy as we weren’t able to!

In fact, my favourite workouts were the No Equipment workouts, and they were 15 minutes a time. The more I got into them, the more I found I needed less recovery time in between each exercise. It really made me push myself.

Exercises Fiona loved on The Healthy Mummy app

I also loved the 28 Day Stronger advanced, which was 30 minutes, and the Intense HIIT with Wendy, which was 10 minutes each and I would do three rounds of them.

These exercises were great to do while Hunter was napping or while Hayley was not working, as we could tag team.

But let’s face it, as a mum, sometimes the last thing you want to do if your baby is napping is exercise! There are a million other things you need to do, like cleaning up, sterilising bottles, putting on the laundry. So, on the days like that, I instead did the Baby Wearing exercises.

I loved these exercises, as I could use Hunter as a weight or interact with him a bit more on the floor.

How Fiona stays motivated

One of the biggest things people reached out to me for was to ask, ‘how do you stay motivated?’

My answer is this: put your workout gear on.

If you are in your active wear, that’s half the battle. You are ready to go. So even if it’s just squats at the kitchen sink or lunges as you put the dishes away, you feel like you want to exercise. If you are in a dress or leggings and a top, you may end up telling yourself, ‘I’ll exercise later’ and then you never do.

So, my top tip to stay motivated is put your gym clothes on and your runners, then just do what you can throughout the day.

When it came to diet, I must admit it wasn’t easy to keep on top of that in hotel quarantine in Queensland. But while we are living in a hotel in Melbourne for Hayley’s work, I have been able to make meals, as we have a kitchen area.

It’s not the same as being at home where you have a full pantry of condiments, but I’ve been trying my best to make meals from The Healthy Mummy app.

Fiona’s favourite recipes

The first thing I have in the morning is a Double Chocolate Premium smoothie I’ve actually just finished the tub. I don’t have a blender here, so I just put the powder in a shaker and add macadamia milk and give it a really good shake.

What I love about The Healthy Mummy smoothies are that I can make these one handed with Hunter on my hip!

Nothing prepares you for how hard it can be to find the time to eat when you have kids! You’re on the go from the moment they open their eyes and sometimes you can get to mid-morning and have not even eaten a thing. Then the problem arises that you are so hungry and end up overeating!

The Healthy Mummy smoothies are nutritious, filling and so simple to make – and I loved this about them. They are so mum-friendly!

While living at a hotel, I’ve found myself making lots of salads from The Healthy Mummy app. I’ve made the Chilli, Lime and Coriander Salmon, the Cajun Chicken and Roast Vegetables, the Sesame Salmon with Stir Fried Veggies, the Mexican Chicken with Corn Couscous Salad, the Thai Style Chicken Noodles and the Chicken Satay Salad.

Hopefully, we will be back home in Sydney at the end of next week and I want to make a heap of healthy desserts and snacks from the app, so that any temptation I have for sweet treats can be replaced by these instead.

Fiona’s new goals

I’m also going to take part in the next 12 Week Challenge and my pledge is to commit to walking at least 30 minutes each day with Hunter. The fresh air will do me some good to get out each day, and if I don’t get chance to do a workout then at least I’m getting my steps in.

My long-term goal before our wedding next year is to get really fit and healthy. I’m no longer breastfeeding so my body is back to being mine again, and I want to focus on getting back into shape.

I’ve not been able to weigh myself lately, but I have noticed my clothes are fitting better than before and I feel lighter in myself as well, so it will be interesting to see how much I’ve gone down.

My skin feels better, I have more energy, my eyes seem brighter and I’m drinking lots more water because I’m logging it on The Healthy Mummy app. It’s so easy to forget and then you think you are hungry, when actually you are just thirsty.

So, my verdict on The Healthy Mummy?

It’s so convenient to follow. I don’t need any extra equipment or need make separate meals. I can be at home – or anywhere! I don’t really need anything else but the app, as you don’t need to pay for expensive gym membership or equipment.

I love that I can access everything so quickly and that there are soooo many options! For both exercise and for recipes.

Plus, The Healthy Mummy just understands the challenges of being a mum. It has everything I need to get back in shape and keep me motivated while also juggling everything else as a busy mum.

I’m excited for hitting my future goals and also for getting back to being ‘me’ again.”
