Video Review: Fischer’s Flabby Brahms Third

Artistic Quality: 6

Sound Quality: 10

The Bottom Line: Smart coupling, beautiful Second Serenade, gorgeous sound, but a disappointing Third Symphony, whose outer movements lack rhythm and excitement, even with an unusually swift tempo for the finale. Fischer seems unable to give the music the strength, the backbone that Brahms demands, and it’s a terrible shame because the two inner movements are especially lovely. In short, a missed opportunity.
